Dear Colleagues,

一道本不卡免费高清Higher education is facing many significant challenges, including demographic shifts, growing skepticism about the value of higher education and the unprecedented influence of technology. The confluence of these variables has dramatically increased competition and price sensitivity as well as heightened expectations among students.

一道本不卡免费高清We have focused on meeting student needs and improving satisfaction as well as revenue-generating initiatives (e.g., more than a dozen new academic offerings, new online programs, enhanced retention efforts, improved summer revenue, etc.) and cost containment (e.g., multiple phases of restructuring across divisions, renegotiation of vendor contracts, sale of assets resulting in lower operating expenses, etc.). However, we still have more ground to cover to achieve our collective aspirations, create a sustainable financial model and serve our students more effectively.

There is no doubt that SXU is financially stronger today than it was at the start of 2017. Much of this improvement has resulted from vigilant cost containment, restructuring and attrition. This has been challenging at multiple levels. Yet, we must continue to focus our efforts and strengthen the student experience.

Retirement.一道本不卡免费高清 Dr. Tony Campbell announced his retirement last week. We are grateful for his service and wish him well as he begins this next chapter of his journey. With an eye toward becoming more relevant and responsive to our students, we are taking this opportunity to better align the University's structure with our strategic priorities.

Position Eliminations. We recently took the difficult action of eliminating three positions spanning Student Affairs and Career Services. Our top priority has been to treat our impacted colleagues with dignity and respect. These moves allow structural realignments designed to address needs throughout the student lifecycle (from recruitment and orientation through graduation and transition to graduate school or professional position) with an emphasis on delivering services in an integrated and transformative way.

University Restructuring. Additionally, several organizational changes are taking place to support the following objectives: a) aligning functions to become seamless and student-centered and b) modifying responsibilities to allow selected administrative staff to focus on critical goals that have campus-wide impact. The following reflects the shifts in organizational structure: A new leadership role is being created (VP for Enrollment Management, Student Development and Student Success) to integrate all elements of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. Maureen Wogan一道本不卡免费高清 will serve in this position and her portfolio of responsibilities will include Undergraduate Admission, Financial Aid, Records, Transfer Students and Partnerships, Dean of Students/Director of Residence Life (see below), Learning Center, Student Media, and an anticipated Center for Student Development, Advising and Success. This structure will support a personalized, holistic and data-informed approach to student success from admission through graduation and beyond.

  • Brian Hotzfield will shift from Executive Director of Enrollment Management to AVP for Enrollment Management, Student Development and Student Success to assist Maureen in this work.
  • The AVP for Student Affairs and Director of Residence Life, Katy Thompson, will become the Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life with a portfolio that includes oversight of Residential Life, Campus Life, Code of Conduct and Care Team.
  • The AVP for Student Affairs and Student Support, Carrie Schade, will become the Executive Director for Student Affairs and Student Support with no change to her current portfolio of responsibilities.
  • We will launch a search for a Director of Student Development, Advising and Success. This office will support the engagement, care, satisfaction and success of students across the lifecycle as outlined in the draft strategic plan.
  • The SXU Title IX Coordinator is Maureen Wogan and the Deputy Title IX Coordinators are Katy Thompson, Samantha Maher Sheahan and Gerry Horan.
  • The Executive Director for Institutional Research, Kathleen Carlson, will add responsibilities to her current portfolio to include Special Assistant to the President to coordinate data demands related to Board of Trustees' oversight for institutional effectiveness.
  • University Mission and Ministry Programs, including Campus Ministry and MercyCare, will report to Jenny DeVivo, the Executive Director for Mission and Heritage.
  • The Office of Public Safety/Campus Police will report to Dan Klotzbach, Office of Business and Finance.
  • Athletics will report to me as President of the University.

Appointment of Special Assistant to the President for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Civility. At SXU, we are committed to educating and graduating "first-gen plus" students within an environment that values, appreciates and builds upon their strengths and honors their complex identities. In order to further this commitment and coordinate related efforts (e.g., related strategic planning items, HLC, etc.), I have appointed Dr. Kathleen McInerney as a Special Assistant in my office to provide overall academic and administrative leadership for aligning efforts related to diversity, equity, inclusion and civility by working closely with all constituent groups across campus. Dr. McInerney will serve on the President's Leadership Team during her initial term of appointment (May - December 2019) and maintain a presence in the Mercy Ministry Center.

Appointment of Co-Leadership for the Illinois Equity in Attainment (ILEA) Initiative. In 2018-2019, SXU became one of 25 university participants in the ILEA initiative, which seeks to eliminate racial and socioeconomic gaps in higher education by 2025, and prioritize improved completion rates. To this end, I am pleased to announce two new co-chairs for this initiative, Ms. Lisa Lyons, Academic Resource Advisor and Coordinator of Rebound, and Dr. Gina Rossetti一道本不卡免费高清, newly promoted Professor of English, Language and Literature Department. To accomplish the goals of this initiative, they will work with the current planning team, consisting of faculty and staff, along with the broader SXU community, and create an integrative, measurable and action-focused plan that addresses retention and completion rate gaps.

一道本不卡免费高清The alignment of our institutional structure to support the developmental lifecycle of students and our work in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion align with our Mercy mission and core institutional values. Further, these shifts are rooted in the current draft of the strategic plan, which outlines a vision for a sustainable, educational future for our students, acknowledging that our commitment to their success is a moral and ethical imperative.

With gratitude,

Laurie
