Dear Colleagues,

Please see some updates below:

2018 U.S. News & World Report Best Online Program Rankings

I'm pleased to report that the SXU School of Nursing recently earned the No. 1 ranking by U.S. News & World Report's 2018 "Best Online Graduate Nursing Programs." The ranking is based on a range of factors such as program reputation, faculty credentials, student engagement and peer reputation. Please join me in thanking and congratulating our colleagues on this wonderful accomplishment recognizing their commitment to academic excellence and student centeredness.

Excellence in Residence Life

In late November, the Office of Residence Life and Residence Hall Association sponsored seven students to attend the Great Lakes Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (GLACURH) regional conference at University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. A total of 43 universities were represented from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and Ontario. Of more than 100 submissions, six SXU students (Caitlin Ross, Jose Tinajero, Mia Kahlon, Eduardo Chavez, Monica Justice and Teddy Bjork) were selected to present their work on topics including leadership, personal development and self-care. All six students will also present their sessions at the Second Annual Synergy Student Leader Conference on January 20.

Leadership Development via Shared Governance Common Readings

I have asked Dr. Peter N. Kirstein, professor of History, and vice president of the Illinois State Conference of the AAUP to co-lead a group of interested faculty and/or administrators with me to explore issues of shared governance using a set of common readings. All participants will receive the book titled "Shared Governance in Times of Change: A Practical Guide for Universities and Colleges" by Steven C. Bahls (2014) from the AGB (Association of Governing Boards) Press. We also strongly recommend that participants consult the 1966 AAUP the AAUP 1994 as well as the 2010

The initial group of participants will be limited. If you are interested, please send an email to me as soon as possible at joyner@exportbedding.com. Once we have the inaugural group of participants nailed down, we will find a few times that we can meet over wine and cheese in the coming weeks.

Summary: December 2017 Board of Trustees Meeting
  • This was the first Board meeting utilizing the newly-constituted, pilot committee structure.
  • The opening reflection focused on Mercy history and mission reflecting the major themes of continuity (i.e., our commitment to core values) and change (i.e., successfully adapting to the changing needs of the communities we serve).
  • A discussion was held with selected members of the Provost Search Committee about priorities from the Board for the position including someone to serve as a mission-driven leader with a proven record in rigorous program development, review and elimination; a data-informed decision maker dedicated to continuous improvement; must have a demonstrated track record in creating improved educational outcomes and operating performance; must be an effective change agent/manager; and must be committed to diversity in all of its forms and serve as a strong, strategic partner for the President, Board and University.
  • The Board approved the name change for the School of Nursing to the School of Nursing and Health Sciences beginning on July 1, 2018.
  • Also approved was the elimination of four education programs and an art history track impacting few, if any, students or faculty.
  • Two new undergraduate academic programs were approved: B.S.-Exercise Science and B.A.-Sports and Fitness Administration.
  • Two new graduate programs were approved: M.A. in Teaching-Early Childhood Education Alternative Licensure and M.A. in Teaching-Secondary Education Alternative Licensure.
  • The Board reviewed and approved the 2017 Audit and Form 990.
  • Chuck Newman of Newman Architecture Inc. was approved as the 2018 recipient of the Shield of Saint Xavier Award.
  • Vice President for Finance and Administration/Chief Financial Officer (VPFA/CFO) Dan Klotzbach and President Laurie Joyner were approved as treasurer and secretary of the corporation, respectively.
  • Maudlyne Iherjirika, urban affairs reporter and columnist, Chicago Sun-Times, was approved as a May 2018 commencement speaker and recipient of an honorary degree. A second candidate was also approved but has not yet responded to the University on his availability.
  • Several members of faculty and staff presented updates on the work of the subgroups comprising the Integrated Planning and Budgeting Committee (IPBC). On behalf of the Board, Chairman Trahey thanked the IPBC representatives for their hard work and impressive progress in 2017.
  • Interim Provost E. Suzanne Lee presented an overview of the HLC Action Plan to guide the University in preparation for the upcoming visit in April 2018.
  • The Board moved into Executive Session to discuss Trusteeship Committee matters and to receive the President's report.
  • The President's report highlighted points of pride, communicated spring enrollment projections, highlighted the work of the Curriculum Innovation Group (CIG), addressed personnel and legal issues, and involved a lengthy discussion of the persistent themes raised by faculty most recently in the December Faculty meeting (i.e., salary, workload and morale issues). The Board expressed their deep appreciation for the shared sacrifices made by faculty and staff and reiterated the need to continue to work together in the coming years to wean SXU off of MAP funding to avoid the potential crisis that we faced in fall 2017.
  • The March Board meeting will focus on strategically building the Board and strengthening Board governance using a nationally-recognized expert from the Association of Governing Boards (AGB).
